Peaks and Pathways: A New Vision for Sustainable Tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan"
Gilgit: In a significant move to promote sustainable tourism, protect cultural identity, and encourage environmentally responsible development, the Department of Tourism, Sports and Culture Gilgit-Baltistan organized a high-level conference titled "Peaks and Pathways."
The conference aimed to foster meaningful dialogue on promoting tourism in the region while preserving natural resources and safeguarding the rich cultural heritage of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The event brought together key government representatives and tourism sector stakeholders, including Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Law, Mr. Ghulam Muhammad; Minister for Planning and Development, Mr. Raja Nasir Ali Khan; Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Information, Mr. Iman Shah; Secretary Tourism, Mr. Zamir Abbas; and several other officials and experts.
Addressing the participants, Minister Ghulam Muhammad emphasized that the breathtaking landscapes of Gilgit-Baltistan are a global treasure. While laws for tourism development exist, he stressed the need for their effective implementation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to environmental conservation through active collaboration with local communities and partner organizations.
Minister Raja Nasir Ali Khan highlighted the government’s strong resolve to enhance tourism infrastructure in line with modern standards. He acknowledged the importance of such platforms in shaping effective policies and unlocking local and international tourism potential.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Iman Shah, Special Assistant for Information, stated that while the promotion of tourism is essential, it must be achieved without compromising the region’s natural environment. He identified increasing energy production capacity as a top priority to ensure uninterrupted tourism activities in the future.
Secretary Tourism, Mr. Zamir Abbas, remarked that Gilgit-Baltistan’s natural beauty is recognized globally. However, he stressed the need to shift focus from mere promotion to responsible tourism that aligns development with cultural and environmental harmony. He called for the adoption of a tourism model that integrates tradition with modernity and fosters long-term sustainability.
During the conference, a test run of the digital system for the Directorate of Tourism Services (DTS) was also introduced. In addition, attendees were captivated by the screening of documentary films showcasing the scenic beauty of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Participants expressed optimism that initiatives like Peaks and Pathways will play a pivotal role in transforming Gilgit-Baltistan into a sustainable, secure, and world-class tourism destination. They also hoped this model would serve as an inspiration for other provinces in Pakistan.
