PRESS RELEASE
Gilgit, May 1, 2026
It has come to the attention of the Tourism & Culture Department, Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, that a fake notification purporting to ban motorcycles in tourist and trekking areas is being circulated on social media. The said document, bearing the title of a “Mountain Regulation Department,” is unauthentic and has no legal or administrative standing.
The Tourism & Culture Department Gilgit-Baltistan is the sole competent authority responsible for regulating tourism, mountaineering, and trekking activities in the region. All such activities are governed under existing Acts, Rules, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to protect the ecology, environment, and fragile mountain ecosystems of Gilgit-Baltistan.
We strongly emphasize that:
• No such blanket ban has been issued by the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan.
• Regulatory measures already in place are aimed at sustainable tourism, ensuring both environmental protection and community benefit.
• Tourists and trekkers are advised to follow the officially notified SOPs and guidelines available with the Department and local administration.
The public is requested to disregard the fake notification and rely only on official communications issued by the Tourism & Culture Department Gilgit-Baltistan. Circulation of false or misleading information not only creates confusion but also undermines the collective efforts to promote responsible tourism in the region.
For authentic updates, please refer to official notices and press releases issued by the Department.
